Safety Manager
Stockton, CA

- An established industry leader is seeking a Safety Manager to oversee safety programs across its California operations.
- This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs that foster a proactive safety culture, minimize workplace risks, and ensure compliance with MSHA, OSHA, and DOT regulations.
- The Safety Manager will focus on hazard identification, compliance monitoring, training, and incident prevention while collaborating with teams to drive continuous safety improvements.
Minimum Requirements: - Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Construction Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field OR relevant safety certifications (CHST, OHST, STS). Equivalent industry experience will be considered.
- Minimum of five years of experience ensuring safety compliance in industrial or construction environments, with strong knowledge of MSHA, OSHA, DOT, and FMCSA regulations.
- Experience working with Safety Management Systems (SMS) and Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) programs, including risk assessments, training, and incident investigations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
- Strong communication, leadership, and coaching skills with the ability to influence safety culture at all levels.
- Self-motivated, organized, and capable of managing multiple projects independently.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record and ability to travel, including overnight stays.
Preferred Qualifications: - Advanced safety certification (CSP, SMP, ASP).
- 10+ years of experience in health and safety, including at least five years in a leadership role.
- Experience leading incident investigations and root cause analysis (preferably using ICAM methodology).
- Strong knowledge of insurance and financial matters related to workplace safety, including workers' compensation and loss control measures.
- Certified trainer with experience developing and delivering safety training programs.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish to effectively communicate with a diverse workforce.
Key Responsibilities: Safety Leadership & Compliance - Promote a safety-first culture by leading and supporting corporate and local safety initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with MSHA, OSHA, DOT, and EPA regulations, monitoring inspections and addressing safety concerns.
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
- Collaborate with Risk Management and HR on workers' compensation and insurance claims.
- Stay informed on regulatory changes and represent the company in industry committees and working groups.
Risk Management & Prevention: - Conduct workplace hazard assessments and recommend corrective actions.
- Develop and implement accident-prevention programs, safety audits, and compliance evaluations.
- Analyze safety performance data and industry benchmarks to drive continuous improvement.
- Provide onsite field safety support, ensuring safe equipment operation and material handling.
Training & Employee Engagement: - Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees at all levels.
- Foster a People-First Culture by promoting employee engagement and well-being.
- Act as a coach and mentor to safety team members, providing leadership and professional development.
- Emergency Preparedness & Operational Support
- Oversee emergency response plans and employee preparedness training.
- Collaborate with operations leaders to align safety initiatives with business objectives.
- Regularly travel to company locations across California to provide hands-on safety support.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: - Expertise in safety regulations (MSHA, OSHA, DOT) and compliance audits.
- Strong knowledge of construction safety practices and industry-specific training.
- Excellent problem-solving and crisis management skills.
- Ability to analyze safety data and implement performance improvements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and safety reporting tools.
- Highly organized, adaptable, and capable of working both independently and collaboratively.
Physical Demands: - Ability to travel extensively, including overnight stays.
- Must be able to perform job duties in varied environments, including construction sites and manufacturing facilities.
- Occasionally required to lift and carry equipment or materials as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (Companies ATS Questions)
: 1. Do you have 5+ years of mining or underground construction experience 2. Do you have MSHA & OSHA Certifications – Strong experience with MSHA (Mining Safety and Health Administration) and OSHA compliance, particularly in underground construction, ready-mix plants, and mining environments. 3. Do you have DOT Compliance Experience – Must have experience with DOT regulations to ensure safety compliance for a fleet-heavy operation with significant transportation risks.
4. Do you have Construction Safety Leadership – 3-5 years minimum in a senior safety leadership role within construction, mining, or industrial environments. Must be capable of rewriting and implementing safety policies at a corporate level.
5. Do you have Claims & Risk Management – Experience handling workers' compensation, auto liability, and large claims, including authority to close claims, work with attorneys, and participate in depositions.
6. Do you have Union Experience – Familiarity with union environments (3 unions in Stockton, 4 unions in Chico) to effectively manage compliance and safety regulations across multiple workforces. - preferred
7. Do you have Bilingual (English/Spanish) – Given the workforce diversity, bilingual skills would be beneficial for communication and training. - preferred
8. Do you have Experience with Civil Engineering & Mining – A background in civil engineering, underground construction, mining, or asphalt plant operations would be a strong advantage. - preferred
9. Do you have Safety Program Development – Experience building or enhancing Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) programs or Safety Management Systems (SMS) would be a plus. - preferred
