The Center is a 900-employee, $130 million nonprofit that accomplishes its vision through three pillars of work: creating and scaling operating programs to test new ideas and solve problems, performing original research to determine what works (and what doesn’t), and providing expert assistance and policy guidance to justice reformers around the world.

Operating Programs

The Center’s operating programs, including the award-winning Red Hook Community Justice Center and Midtown Community Justice Center, test new ideas, solve difficult problems, and attempt to achieve systemic change within the justice system. Our projects include community-based violence prevention programs, alternatives to incarceration, reentry initiatives, and court-based initiatives that reduce the use of unnecessary incarceration and promote positive individual and family change. Through this programming, we have produced tangible results like safer streets, reduced incarceration, and improved neighborhood perceptions of justice.

Research

The Center's research teams are staffed with social scientists, data analysts, and lawyers who are academically-trained or have lived experience and who conduct research in the U.S. and globally on diverse criminal-legal system and justice issues. Their work includes evaluating programs and policies; conducting exploratory, community-based studies; and providing research translation and strategic planning for system actors. The Center has published studies on topics including court and jail reform, intimate partner violence, restorative justice, gun violence, reentry, sixth amendment rights, and progressive prosecution. The research teams strive to make their work meaningful and actionable to the communities they work with, policymakers, and practitioners.

Policy & Expert Assistance

The Center provides hands-on, planning and implementation assistance to a wide range of jurisdictions in areas of reform such as problem-solving courts (e.g., community courts, treatment courts, domestic violence courts), tribal justice, reducing incarceration and the use of fines/fees and reducing crime and violence. Our current expert assistance takes many forms, including help with analyzing data, strategic planning and consultation, policy guidance, and hosting site visits to its operating programs in the New York City area. 

Center Support

A dedicated support team within the Center ensures the smooth functioning of operations across various domains, including finance, legal, technology, human resources, fundraising, real estate, and communications. Comprising 15% of the organization's staff, these teams provide essential infrastructure support and innovative solutions aligned with the Center's mission and values. 

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Communications Department at the Center for Justice Innovation is seeking an experienced Temporary Digital Archive Specialist to lead the creation and maintenance plan for an organizational digital archive. The Temporary Digital Archive Specialist must have a strong background in archiving or library science, with experience organizing, preserving, and digitizing images, news clips, and historical documents. This project involves creating a user-friendly, easily maintained archive for rapid search and retrieval of images, documents, etc. The Temporary Digital Archive Specialist will need to sort through both digital and hard copies of photos, paper documents and other artifacts, digitize hard copies using advanced scanning equipment, generate appropriate metadata, and ensure the preservation of image and document integrity. Reporting to the Writing Senior Advisor, the Temporary Digital Archive Specialist will work closely with the Communications and Office Management teams to create an image and document archive, and document effective strategies for maintenance and upkeep.

• Create and manage a digital archive/storage system for the organization, preservation, and digitization of images and historical records in accordance with organizational guidelines;
• Gather material for archiving from widely dispersed sources, including a wide range of departments and programs within the Center, the Center’s website, internal digital storage systems, online locations, vertical files, etc;
• Support the communications team in migrating and organizing media files (photos, videos, etc) into a new digital asset management system (Canto);
• Associate and manage metadata for digitized documents to facilitate easy retrieval and organization;
• Implement strategies and best practices for preserving the integrity of digital images, ensuring long-term accessibility and reliability;
• Maintain detailed records of imaging processes, metadata associations, and workflow integrations;
• Ensure compliance with the Center’s standards and best practices;
• Organize and systemize the following:
  • All photos–hard and digital copies–in a single digital location in a format easily searchable by person, event, program, issue, time and location;
  • Publications (including the Center’s newsletter); 
  • Posters, fliers, and social media graphics; 
  • Audio-visual recordings (podcasts and videos, including raw footage stored in such a way as to be easily retrievable); 
  • Concept papers of all programs or initiatives that are ultimately implemented; 
  • Media coverage, digital and hard copies;
  • Awards, official proclamations, etc.; and
  • Key personnel and financial data that tell the story of the Center’s evolution and growth; and
• Additional tasks as necessary.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree and 1-2 years of relevant experience required;
• Specialized degree or certificate in library science or archiving preferred;
• Experience creating and maintaining an archive/library for an organization, institution or business;
• Experience with image management, digitization, or a similar role;
• Expertise in metadata association and management;
• Ability to integrate imaging solutions into strategic workflows;
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality control; and
• Effective problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot technical issues.

Position Type:  Part-time temporary for 2-3 months,10-15 hours per week.

Position Location:  Midtown Manhattan.

Compensation: The compensation range for this position is $28.00 - $30.00 per hour based on a 35-hour work week and is commensurate with experience.
